Marine Litter Symposium 2016

On Saturday, December 10th, there will be a symposium in Tokyo on marine litter, hosted by The Ministry of the Environment Japan.

The problem of marine litter has become an important issue not only in Japan but also globally. The Ministry of the Environment Japan has been interested in this issue from an early stage, working to understand the current status and on the disposal and source prevention of marine litter.

During the G7 Toyama Environment Ministers’ Meeting, held in May 2016, a Communiqué was adopted which highlighted the commitment of G7 member countries to actions towards standardizing and harmonizing monitoring methodologies for assessing the state of marine litter. As the Chair of the G7 Summit, Japan has an even more important role to play in this issue.

The first part of the symposium in the morning will be an international symposium on marine litter–especially microplastics-with invited speakers and experts from overseas. The second part in the afternoon will be a domestic symposium, focusing on actions against marine litter being implemented by various stakeholders in Japan.

We look forward to your participation to this symposium open to the public.
